After completing a community IPPE rotation and while currently working at an inpatient pharmacy, I realized my career interests may lie outside of these traditional pharmacy roles. From speaking with classmates who are interested in the industry field and learning more about what a medical science liaison (MSL) does, I believe I would be more suitable for this profession. Holding multiple leadership positions in pharmacy school has profoundly developed my interpersonal communication skills that I know will benefit me when responding to health care providers’ questions about products, networking with key opinion leaders to identify emerging clinical issues in the disease states, attending medical conferences to stay informed on emerging clinical research, and responding to medical information requests. I recently completed a rotation at Scripps Green Hospital where my preceptor would ask me to answer physicians’ or social workers’ questions regarding the efficacy of a drug and alternative therapies. I would read numerous clinical trials and search different databases to come up with a recommendation that I then presented to my preceptor. I enjoyed doing this type of work and, to my understanding, this aligns with some of an MSL’s responsibilities. Therefore, during my P4 year, I plan to take a few industry rotations as well as apply to various fellowships to pursue this career interest.
