Huck utilizes his first false identity, Sarah Williams, when visiting Mrs. Loftus, a selfish, racist woman. Through this false identity, Huck learns of her hate towards salvesslaves like Jim and her abundant greediness when acquiringshe inquires, “Does three hundred dollars lay around every day for people to pick up? Some folks think the nigger ain’t far from here. I’m one of them-butthem— but I hainthain't talked it around” (Twain 136). Mrs. Loftus continues to explain how she believes Jim is HucksHuck's killer and that her husband will catch him and kill him, and they will have the three hundred dollars for themselves. Huck for the first time recognizes racism, although hashe has seen it all before. IsHis deformed conscience begins to form because, while society supports slavery and believes that salvesslaves are not human and have no feelings, Huck believes the opposite. Through this experience, he comes to find that socketsociety will kill a black man for money even if proven innocent, much like Mrs. Loftus’ husband waiting to kill Jim. Huck journeys on from Mrs. Loftus’ home eventually reaching the Grangerford’s home.
