The role of vocabulary has changed significantly in recent years. Between 1950 and 1960, the status of vocabulary was very low, while audio-lingualism was very important and had a significant impact on methodology. Nevertheless, over time, this position has changed and the senserole of vocabulary ishas increased bywith the development and effect of thein teaching of communicative languages. The author gives an example as wellexamples that are asked by students and teachers, who are constantly considered by themconsidering vocabulary. Owing to that, the author underlines the fact that vocabulary stimulates interest. Nunan (1991: 116).
Richards and Schmidt (2010: 638) state that the term vocabulary refers to single words, lexemes, language articulations, and compound words. Furthermore, this term contains active and passive language knowledge. Lexemes are classified and characterized as abstract units, including associated word types, idioms as units whose meanings do not derive from the meaning of the components, and compound words as a variety of two or more terms that operate as a single word.
According to Ur (2009: 60) described vocabulary as words which are taught in a foreign language. ItThis means all words that students learn in external language. He also adds that a new word can be not only a single word, but also more than two or three but, even that theythose that express one idea. The author provides examples. One of them is the word post office, which is made up of two words. He emphasises the fact that it is better to use the term ‘items’ instead of ‘words’ when we talk about vocabulary.
