The idea of Federalism is the foundation of the American government. The Founders of our nation believed that an even balance of powers between the Federal government and State governments would be the best option for the new nation, as it would prevent tyranny over the state governments, as well as maintain order within the young country.

After the Articles of Confederation, it became clear that a stronger federal government was necessary to maintain a functioning nation. However, in order to keep that, they were not going to get enough power or say if the Federal government got more power.
