In the twenty-first century, outdoor pop and rock music festivals on greenfieldGreenfield sites have become an integral part of the British summer, with 30.9 million festival attendances recorded in 2016, increasing by 12% from 27.7 million in 2015 (UK Music, 2016). For festivalgoers, they offer a break from the everyday world of work, and a chance to socialise with friends, families and like-minded others in an atmosphere of fun, freedom and excess. The sector has expanded considerably since the early 2000s, with the total number of events doubling between 2005 and 2011, and an estimated 500 outdoor festivals now held each year. For many, especially students, festivals offer a chance to party, and to make a weekend full of memories. The trip to the festival is planned with military precision, and it is looked forward to all year. It can be a true adventure, with people taking tents with them instead of staying in hotels. Young people find themselves preparing shopping lists with portable cardboard toilets, festival food and drinkdrinks, wellington boots and other rarely-used accessories that mark them as one of the festival crowd. The market for music festivals is now incredibly popular, compared to the 1970s, where only 1,500 Glastonbury tickets were sold, in contrast to the recent figure of 185,000 tickets. It is currently one of the biggest festivals in the world, tickets. Tickets are sold out almost immediately. It’s easy to understand why festivals are so popular. Firstly, they offer people a full experience. They get to listen to their favourite bands, see them on stage and if they are lucky maybe an autograph too.
