Bennett’s view of the family status, beinghaving been raised by a single parent, it is safe to believe he ventured out to find out the mental state of those who choose to raise children alone. Even though Bennett was in a single-parent household, he found solace in reading stories about male American heroes such as Abraham Lincoln, Roy Campanella, and Gary Cooper. It is mentioned that the moral development of children and this development requires adults’ guidance as well as inspiration (Bennett). In The Broken Hearth, Bennett believes that a series of trends in American life–life–most prominently divorce, cohabitation, single parenting, and the push for homosexual unions, most prominent among them–haveunions–have considerably weakened the family (Wolfe, 2014).
