Much of what we have learned about ancient Mesopotamia comes from the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest written narrative containing the first known account of the “great flood.”. These Sumerian texts may have had a potential impact on later literature such as the Bible. For example, a portion of the epic closely resembles the Bible’s account of Noah’s flood. These similarities lead us to question, “Does the Bible merely confirm what we have discovered from the Epic, or its ist simply a more elaborate and developed version of the ancient story? The importance of researching ancient Sumerian texts is to compare them to the later works of history, so we may better understand their origins.
