Deception in Twelfth Night
Misrepresent
ed abouting one's identity or intentions can lead to misunderstanding or deceiving. In William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night many characters deceived one another. In Twelfth Night characters often lead an individual to being harmed, trouble, and craziness. Deceiving others about one's identity can often lead to an individual being hurt, to confusion, and madness.
When one believe
s they know one's identity but they do not, it can lead to confusion. Antonio thinks that Cesario is Sebastian and it causes an argument with the count Orsino. Orsino asks Antonio, "When came he to this town" (Shakespeare. V.i.89). Orsino knows that Cesario has been serving him for three months and it is impossible for one person to be in two different places at the same time. Antonio asks Cesario for his money back, however it is Sebastian that has his purse, which causes confusion. When being arrested Antonio says, " I must entreat of you some of that money" (Shakespeare.III.iv.327). Antonio thinks Cesario has his money but Cesario does not know what he is talking about, which angers Antonio. Therefore one's identity causes people to misunderstand each other.
When one lies to the one who trusts them it can lead an individual to being hurt. Sir Andrew thinks that Sir Toby's niece is going to marry him with the help of Sir Toby but Sir Toby tell
s him that, "I have heard her swear't. Tut , there's life in't, man" (Shakespeare.I.iii.103). Olivia will never marry a man after her brother died but Sir Toby tells Sir Andrew that there is hope for him. This causes Sir Andrew to beinget hurt. Olivia loves Cesario but Cesario keeps on refusing her saying, " No woman has; nor never none shall mistress be of it" ( Shakespeares.III.i.159). Cesario continues to reject Olivia because Cesario is a woman too. Cesario cannot love any other woman because she loves the count Orsino. This causes Olivia to feel pain as she does not understand why Cesario refuses her love. Thus if one lies to the one who trusts them it causes people to be unhappy.
When one thinks someone has feelings for them but they do not, it can make an individual go mad. Maria, Sir Toby
, and Sir Andrew plan to get revenge on Malvolio who has angered them. Maria says, " Observe him, for the love of mockery; for I know this letter will make a contemplative idiot of him" ( Shakespeare. II.v.17) . Maria has written a letter to make Malvolio believe that Olivia loves him. Maria pretends to write like Olivia in order to deceive Malvolio and ensure he falls for the letter. When Maria, Sir Toby, and Sir Andrew tricked Malvolio into believing that Olivia likes him, he has gowenet mad. He says to Sir Topas,`` "I am not mad, Sir Topas; I say to you, this house is dark.``" (Shakespeare.IV.ii.40). Olivia thinks Malvolio has gone mad because he has been dressing up, acting, and talking weird lately. Wwhich made her so suspicious about his health, Ttherefore if one thinks someone has feelings for them but they do not is causes them to go insane.
In conclusion, lying to others about one`s identity can often lead to
being distress, disorientation, and delusion. Never disguise one into a different person because it can lead someone to being hurt, confused or go mad.
