Boys were thought performingto perform better in subjects relating to math and science, whereas girls were acknowledged performingas being able to perform better in reading and writing and other creative areas. One reason that boys attendboys express a lack of interest in literacy is due to their resistance ofin expressing their emotions and inner thoughts. In the chapter of, “The ‘Bad Boy’ and the Writing Curriculum”, McPhail addressesstates that boys are suffering aboutin their writing skill-set, because teachers do not acknowledge the gender differences in thetheir writing preferences. Therefore, the topics of personal narrative and poetry that are viewed as suitable topics in school academic teaching essentially limit the choices that can be offered to enhance the students’ interests., (p. 195). The limitation of writing topics become a hinderance empoweringhindrance especially when it comes to empowering and encouraging writing motivations. On the contrary, girls are viewed better at expressing themselves than boys,. This is because girls are less restrained than boys in many traditional ideas. Girls are considered less rational than boys inregarding social views, and are seen as being able to be more influenced by emotional factors. Thus, girls perform better in writing because they can express their thoughts and feelings openly through their writing pieces. Personal narrative and poetry are exactly the right genres of that assist in reinforcing the girls’ capabilities.
