Second, climate change is a serious problem because it aggravates social progress and causes poverty. Climate change affects many regions of the earth, but the people that live in poverty are most affected. In poor countries, like Haiti and Ethiopia, most people don’t have enough money to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. They live in poorly builtpoorly-built homes and grow their own food. Professor Christopher Fields states, “for“For the poor and the vulnerable, a non-huge disaster can have huge consequences”consequences.” If a non-huge disaster can have huge consequences for the poor, imagine what can happen if they are faced with extreme weather caused by climate change. In poor countries like Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Ethiopia, climate change causes more damage. Last year, Hurricane Maria destroyed many poor houses in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. These countries have suffered from no electricity for weeksmonths. There were also shortages in food and water which caused poor people to fall into deeper levels of poverty.
